Welcome

An Abstract Image

I hope this site will be of interest to visitors who travelled on Longleat Railway during its first 45 years. I have tried to include both major and minor changes that have occurred at Longleat Railway since the first train ran on 27th August 1965. For those of you who are returning to this site, I recommend that you click on the 'Latest Update' tab.

The Setting

An Abstract Image

The railway is situated in the grounds of Longleat House and Safari Park. Longleat House is the home of the 7th Marquess of Bath.

Longleat House was the first stately home to open its doors to the public. It was opened by the 6th Marquess of Bath in 1949.

In 1966 the worlds first safari park, outside of Africa, opened.

Other attractions have opened within the grounds since then, and now make up one of the best value family days out in the country.
